Question by Jacey: Did you teach your baby sign language before they could talk? What age did you start?
I have a book “My First Baby Signs” that recommends starting when they wave “bye-bye”. Just curious about teaching my baby this. She is my first.

I teach my 15 m.o. son baby signs. We began teaching him starting at 4 or 5 months. He began signing back at us with simple signs (ie- food, drink) at 7 months. Now he’s got a vast vocabulary of around 25 signs that he uses to communicate with us. At this age he is picking up signs quicker. It’s the best thing ever we could ever have taught him. Go for it & stick with it. There is no better feeling than knowing what your baby’s needs are straight from the source. It’s amazing how intelligent baby’s are!

Question by LUCKY3: How Could A Genetic Disease Be Present In A Baby With No Familial History?
For example, how could a baby inherited Milroy disease, if the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents did not have it?
Can people carry genes for a disease, which lies dormant in them?
How do certain diseases “skip a generation” Why do they?
Are all disease carrying genes the same?
How long does a gene pool live?
(poorly phrased, I know.)

Yes, people can be carriers for disease. Sometimes a mother and a father can both be carriers of a disease, which means they do not have the disease. However when they have a child, they each give the child half of their DNA and the child gets the disease that they were carriers for. This disease will be passed on from generation to generation either in carrier form or expressed as long as the disease is one in which the affected person reaches sexual maturity and the person reproduces.

I didn’t get my period this month and it was late last month. I took a pregnancy test both months and they both came back negative. Also, I am on the Pill.
I already called my dr. and I am waiting for her to call back but in the meantime I wondered if anyone has any ideas. Also, is it possible I’m pregnant even though the test was negative?
I’ve been on the pill for about 4 years now.

From a genetics doctor & your man had a 50% 50% chance of passing on a genetics disease to your child would you
A. Have his baby anyway.
B. Adopt a child.
C. Have another mans baby & pretend its his and act like you were lucky that your child didn’t get the genetic disease.
I have 2 kids w/ a genetic syndrome myself & am wondering if other women would risk having a child w/ a genetics syndrome or disease.

My toddler (14 months old) has 7 teeth. Up until a few days ago we have been using one of those rubber “finger toothbrushes” that slips over your finger and has soft silicone bristles on it. We bought him a new “big boy” toothbrush that looks like a regular adult toothbrush but smaller at the baby store. It is made for toddlers and labeled “soft bristles” and seemed perfect. We use special non-floruide baby toothpaste as well.
So, we started using the new little toothbrush and his poor little gums bleed when we do! His gums look sensitive and red and bleed when we brush his teeth now. When we feel the brush, the bristles are VERY VERY soft so we don’t know why this is happening.
It is like he has gingivitis or something…but I can’t help but to think it is a result of the switch to a new toothbrush.
Any idea what is going on? Did this happen to your baby? When did you start using this type of “regular” toothbrush on your child? I just feel he is too old for that baby finger toothbrush now…
Don’t tell me to go to the doctor/dentist. He has an appointment in 2 weeks. I just want to get some advice/suggestions/feedback from other moms in the meantime.
Thanks!!
To clarify, this is the toothbrush we used to use:

This is the 3rd time since July of last year that my period has been over a month late? I keep taking pregnancy tests but they’re all negative. What else could be causing such a late period?

My daughter has Tay Sachs disease (a genetic disease which can’t be cured and is eventually fatal). She’s beautiful and started out normal like any other child but then began showing symptoms. She’s over four now and is a very sweet child but experiences a lot of involuntary movements and is now unable to walk properly and can’t control her bodily functions at all. She’s lost a lot of weight and awareness too. I have another daughter who’s normal, and I didn’t know my partner and I both carried the gene for the disease until after I had her, she was diagnosed when I started noticing her unusual behaviors/symptoms. I’m pregnant again though this pregnancy was not exactly planned for, I got pregnant while on birth control. And basically I’m afraid this baby will be born with Tay Sachs. I was wondering if you were pregnant and you and your partner were carries for a serious genetic disease would you want to find out if your baby had the disease during your pregnancy? What would you do?
