Baby Eczema – Everything You Need to Know

Eczema can be one tough cookie to beat. It’s a skin disease that affects thousands of children across America. In fact, nine out of ten children are diagnosed with the skin disease before they hit the age of 5, and two-thirds of children get eczema before they even reach 6 weeks of age! Those results obviously show that eczema is more widespread than most think.

Many parents may not even realize that their child has eczema, as the symptoms may first appear to be atypical to regular, dry skin. The problem is, the symptoms eventually worsen, producing dry, red patches across different parts of their bodies. With the eczema comes the uncontrollable itching that is associated with the disease. It is also often painful, as the skin may crack open and bleed occasionally.

If you think you’re child has eczema, you may want to seek the advice of a medical professional to get it properly diagnosed. If you’re child already has eczema, you most likely know about the prescription creams and medicines that are used to treat the symptoms of eczema. The problem with these creams is that they only provide temporary relief of the symptoms of eczema, but do not actually cure it completely.

Since the eczema does not become fully cured with skin treatments, it will go away temporarily, only to eventually continue to flare up throughout their childhood. Also, prescription creams can even worsen the symptoms of eczema in some people. This is why I was dedicated to find an alternative way to treat and cure eczema.

See, my daughter suffered from eczema badly. And while we wasted money on all sorts of medicines, creams and treatments, I finally found a cure for her eczema. The best part? It was all natural. You can learn more about how to cure baby eczema at Cure Eczema.

Baby Sleep Routine – 5 Must Know Steps

If your sick of stumbling around your house in the dead of the night trying to answer the call of your baby who apparently doesn’t require sleep, then you need a baby sleep routine. Nobody likes losing sleep and it can have drastic implications on your daily life and that of your family.

So how do we get that little baby to sleep soundly so we can relax?

Creating a baby sleep routine…

A good sleeping routine should consist of the things you need to get done with your baby before bedtime that aren’t very stimulating. We want to get the baby to start feeling sleepy, so no crazy fun games! Here is a good routine that is working well for a lot of parents:

1
. Take a nice relaxing bath with the baby (don’t fall asleep yet!)

2. Give your child a feed and burp

3. Now it’s time to work your sleepy powers, read a story or sing a lullaby

4. Once the baby is sleepy, put him where you want him to sleep while still awake

5. Let him fall asleep by himself (now you can go to sleep!)

Important tip: Many new parents unintentionally create bad sleeping habits for their babies. Letting your baby fall asleep in your arms or while rocking is nice, but the baby will eventually start relying on that to get it to sleep.

You know what that means? He won’t be able to get to sleep when he wakes during the night and you’ll have to blindly thump and bump up and down the halls to get him back to sleep. Fortunately sticking to a good baby sleep routine will stop this, so you can catch some winks.

Baby Sleep Patterns – Know What To Expect

Like all areas of your baby’s development, their sleep cycles are somewhat predictable and will have a  pattern to them. The need for baby sleep is highest when they’re first born, then gradually declines as they get older. It’s important that they get every bit of sleep they need and you should see your doctor immediately if your baby experiences prolonged sleeplessness.

The following will give you a general guideline of sleep patterns to expect from your child in the up-coming years:

From the newborn stage, until the end of the first month your infant will sleep anywhere from 16 – 20 every day. Obviously in this stage baby sleep and waking to feed will take up most of their time.

From 6 weeks of age, up until the 4 month mark baby will likely sleep 15-16 hours every day. You’ll find that your baby spends more time using their hands and will start to smile in the few hours they’re awake.

The 4 month to 6 month stage will normally have your baby sleep much less. 9-12 hours is most common and they will start to become more curious of their surroundings, while starting to crawl. Normally their awake time will be broken up by a few short naps.

When baby is 6 to 9 months of age, they will likely sleep a little bit more than the previous months. They will be growing in length and burning a lot more energy with all the crawling and playing (11-12 hours is normal at this stage in their development). Again, you can expect their waking time to be broken up by a short nap or two.

From 9 to 13 months baby sleep will stay around 11-12 hours, broken up by naps, with lots of activity in their little bodies — walking and starting to form words.

Toddler Stage

From thirteen months onward, your toddler will sleep on average around 10 hours per night and most toddlers gravitate away from napping. From 5 years old and up it’s normal for sleep to decrease down to 8 or 9 hours a night until adulthood.

What Do You Know About Chagas Disease?

What Do You Know About Chagas Disease?

WHILE reaching for toys, a child in a remote Bolivian village touches a window ledge in the adobe hut and comes in contact with an insect, the vinchuca, or its excrement. Later, the child suffers from inflammatory swellings, symptoms of Chagas disease. A man, sleeping on the dirt floor of his dwelling, is bitten by the same type of insect. Years later he has an advanced case of Chagas disease. From the southern border of the United States to the central regions of Argentina, it is estimated that 12,000,000 people suffer from this affliction. It is called one of the biggest problems of Latin America.

What, then, are the symptoms of Chagas disease? Once contracted, how can the disease be alleviated? What preventive measures might be taken to avoid contracting the affliction? Particularly if you live in the tropical countries of South and Central America, it would be good to know the answers to these questions. Even if you do not live where Chagas disease is most prevalent, there are sound reasons to learn more about it.

The vinchuca is one of the principal carriers of the dreaded Tripanosoma cruzi, a tiny one-celled parasite, which multiplies in humans and animals, and which is the cause of Chagas disease. It was in 1908 that Charles Chagas discovered the parasite for the first time in the intestine of the vinchuca. But the disease can also be transmitted to humans from dogs and cats.

Central and South American countries have participated, separatedly and also jointly, in studies surrounding Chagas disease and its eradication. In Bolivia, studies have intensified since the 1940s. According to one Bolivian investigation, 1,800,000 people in that country of nearly 5,000,000 inhabitants are exposed to the possibility of vinchuca bites, and 600,000 actually have been bitten.

Harm Done by the Vinchucaand Chagas Disease

These studies have revealed that some vinchucas do not carry the parasites, and those that are carriers do not infect a person by the original bite. When filling its body with blood from the victim, a carrier insect may leave its excrement near the puncture. It may drag its posterior part over the bite, thus introducing the parasites into the victims bloodstream. Or, at times, the victim immediately scratches the bitten area and infects himself.

Why is the victim not aware of the vinchucas presence? This insect is active at night. Often it drops from the ceiling onto the sleeping victim. It sticks its sharp, daggerlike snout into the victim, usually around the eyes, where the skin is very soft, or into the supple skin of the neck. The bite is painless. Therefore, without the victims being aware of what is happening, the vinchuca may suck off a small quantity of blood. Later, however, an inflammation develops around the bite. The eye may even swell shut. There may also be a glandular swelling.

Once in the bloodstream, the parasites reproduce rapidly. In the first few weeks, the parasites are detectable by laboratory analysis. Afterward, because of the production of antibodies in the victim, the parasites multiply less rapidly, making it more difficult to detect the disease by medical examination.

In the final stages of the illness, the parasites cause troubles ranging from heart failure to liver and spleen infections. Harm may be done to the lymph nodes and the brain. The victims blood pressure drops. Sometimes the parasites get into the heart. As they begin to multiply and grow, they cause clotting or stoppage in the blood vessels. Worse still, they burst the veins. Some victims suffer from enlargement of the large intestine. Digestive and elimination problems may result.

Certain victims of Chagas disease develop these serious reactions later on in life. The progress of the disease has been likened to a great iceberg in water. One small part of the total mass can be seen above the water, while the greater portion is submerged. It is the same with the symptoms of Chagas disease. Quite often the victim and his physician are unaware of the patients having contracted the disease, and the effects usually show up 15 to 20 years later, when the disease is much more advanced.

Chagas disease is not necessarily contagious. If one member of the family has it, all will not necessarily contract it. The principal way in which the disease is transmitted is by the bite of a carrier of the parasite. However, babies born of diseased mothers can get it, as the parasite penetrates the mothers placenta and reaches the developing infant during the last months of pregnancy. It is also known that a suckling baby can get the parasite through the milk of a diseased mother.

The vinchuca is not limited to crawling, but can also fly. It bites animals, too, even though it lives mainly on human blood. Interestingly, poultry, doves and other domesticated birds do not develop the disease. Nevertheless, where there are animals or birds in or near the home, there is an open invitation for bloodsucking insects to enter the house and thereafter introduce Chagas disease to the occupants.

Another Danger Blood Transfusion

The book Usted y la enfermedad de Chagas (You and Chagas Disease) points to another danger the passing of parasites from donor to patient by way of a blood transfusion. According to the publication Tropical Diseases Bulletin, Chagas disease, along with African trypanosomiasis (African sleeping sickness), yaws and filariasis (hairlike worms from two to three inches [5 to 8 centimeters] long), is transmittable through blood transfusions. In areas where blood is donated indiscriminately by the public, serious danger exists of contracting Chagas disease. Hence, those who obey the Bibles law to abstain from blood, both animal and human, are more likely to remain in good health.

It should also be noted that international travel can quickly transport disease-carrying parasites from Latin America to any other part of the globe. Hence, those who avoid blood transfusions are, to that degree, not running the risk of being infected by the disease.

Prevention

To date, there has not been a successful way to cure this disease completely. Drugs often produce problems that are nearly as bad as the malady itself.

Some suggest internal and external use of herbs in order to counteract the effects of the disease. Herbs and blossoms of the spilanthe plant are recommended. It is also suggested that one eat oceanic plants like kelp, as their iodine content can be assimilated by the organism. Herbs appear to lessen the effect of the disease, but they do not eliminate the parasites.

Cleanliness is the most important preventive measure. This is because the vinchuca makes its home in the dark, unhygienic areas of houses made of mud, straw, palm leaves and other rudimentary materials. Therefore, it has been suggested that new structures be made of cement, plaster and lime to eliminate possible habitats for the vinchuca. Also, the regular cleaning of houses and outbuildings is of utmost importance.

Charles Chagas, the discoverer of the insect carrier, recommended the destruction of the vinchuca as the only solution for eliminating the disease. Since there is no satisfactory cure for the infection, many are in agreement with this. At present there are insecticides that destroy the vinchuca in all its stages, including the egg stage.

Acid Reflux Babies – What You Need To Know

You may be surprised to learn that acid reflux babies are quite common. In fact, most infants experience mild heartburn or reflux at some time. Which doesn’t make it any less frightening for parents. So let’s take a look at what’s happening when a baby has acid reflux and what can tip you off about the condition.

Acid reflux babies experience the same condition as adults. Stomach acids push up against the lower esophageal sphincter and pass into the esophagus, often rising as high as the back of throat. The result is a painful burning sensation.

Infants with this condition will often display behaviors such as spitting, vomiting, coughing, irritability, poor feeding, and even blood in the stools. Acid reflux disease can also cause respiratory problems including pneumonia, strictures and ulcerations on the esophageal wall, and malnourishment. Although, these signs don’t always mean your infant is suffering from acid reflux disease. There may be something else entirely going on.

In more severe cases, which are much rarer, acid reflux babies may experience poor growth due to the inability to keep food down, refusing to feed due to pain, blood loss from the acidic burning of the esophagus, and breathing problems.

Acid reflux in babies can be the result of a number of factors, though the most common factors tend to be complicated by the fact that infants spend most of their days lying on their backs or in a supine position and consume mostly liquid foods. The combination of these exerts pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which creates a greater risk of reflux. Other influences may also include the anatomy of an infant’s stomach, improper or incomplete development of the lower esophageal sphincter during fetal growth, poor diet, overweight, food allergies and a host of other factors.

There are some things you can do to help if your baby is displaying acid reflux symptoms. For instance, you can do simple things such as changing your infant’s food and keeping your infant in an upright position after eating. This extra attention could be all your child really needs.

If these don’t appear to be helping, it’s time to see your pediatrician. Tests may be needed to make a proper diagnosis, and your doctor will likely want to monitor your child’s feeding habits and possible symptoms. You may be asked to keep a log of your baby’s behaviors, such as irritability, crying, etc. The more information your pediatrician has, the easier it’ll be to make a proper diagnosis and get your infant feeling better.

In most cases, acid reflux babies will exhibit symptoms that are easily manageable. But it’s always better to play it safe and involve your pediatrician if you any concerns about your baby’s health.

Know the Early Sings of Pregnancy – your Body is the Best Indicator

Early signs of pregnancy can be many and it is very important for you, as a woman, to know as to what are these early symptoms. There are some early signs of pregnancy which you may experience even before you missed your period. It is not necessary that you may experience all these early sings of pregnancy but it is likely that once in a while you will encounter one of these symptoms. Lack of energy, tender breasts, nauseatic feeling, dizziness and lightheadedness and so on are all early signs of pregnancy. It is becomes very important for us to discuss everything in detail and clear out certain misconceptions that people have in their minds about pregnancy.

Hallmark Symptoms of Pregnancy:

Feeling of exhaustion and lack of energy are early signs of pregnancy. Often this tiredness is accredited to other things that are part of everyday life. The hormonal changes that takes in the body due to pregnancy and also the amount of work that you are doing is the cause of fatigue. And, the hormonal changes are usually attributed to early sings of pregnancy. The best way to overcome this fatigue is to lie down on bed as much as you can. A short nap is not ruled out to avoid this fatigue. Another very rare but early sign of pregnancy is implantation bleeding. Just before your menstrual cycle begins there is a brown or slightly pink vaginal discharge. This usually happens when the fertilized egg is embedded in the uterus. This is very rare phenomenon and only happens in 30% of all pregnancy cases.

Nauseatic feeling is perhaps one of the hallmarks of pregnancy symptoms. Again we often mistake it to be a consequence of food poisoning. But nausea is something that grows gradually. Nauseatic feeling will be slight and is one of the early sign of pregnancy but will increase with time. Nausea does not subside easily and this is perhaps one of the first signals that a woman is pregnant. A missing period is perhaps a sure though not always early sign of pregnancy. Even if consistent feeling of nausea does not send a hint to a woman that she is regnant, a missing period will surely do.

Since a woman’s body is continuously working hard to support the growth of embryo, it continuously needs energy to sustain itself. And that energy is provided by a healthy diet. Increase in the diet level is also an early sign of pregnancy. However, decrease in the appetite level can also be an early sign of pregnancy. It can go either way and vary on everyday basis. A clear understanding of pregnancy health issues is brought out in the pregnancy journals and also various pregnancy related websites.

There are too many early signs of pregnancy and unfortunately we cannot provide a perfect list that can help you determine whether you are pregnant or not. It is not necessary that you experience all the early signs of pregnancy but you tend to experience a few of them. Some women have even reported of experiencing no symptoms at all. Just remember your body is the best indicator to tell you whether you are pregnant or not, even before you undergo a pregnancy test.

What Parents Should Know About a Baby Sleep Pattern

How is a Baby’s Sleep Pattern Different than an Adult’s?

Yes, babies sleep a lot, especially newborns. Your new baby will sleep about 16 to 18 hours a day. Unfortunately, this is not during the typical hours of 6pm and 8am. A baby’s sleep pattern is much shorter than an adult’s and this is why babies continually wake. When an adult wakes from sleep they roll over and go back to sleep, this is not so easy for a baby. A baby has not yet learned how to go back to sleep. It seems odd that this is a learned behavior, but it’s true. Until your new baby learns how to fall back to sleep, he or she will rely on you to help them get back to sleep.

A baby sleep pattern also has double the amount of light sleep cycles than an adult’s. For the sleep deprived adult desperately trying everything to lull their precious bundle to sleep, this can be excruciating. Because of the many light sleep cycles, babies wake up very easily. You’ve rocked, cuddled and finally little Jr. nods off. You slip off to the nursery and just as Jr. touches the mattress he wakes up! Back to the rocking chair! Understanding this aspect of a baby sleep pattern will at least help you keep your patience, if not anything else.

How Can I Help my Baby Sleep Better?

Naturally, as a newborn matures, so will the baby’s sleep pattern. Ideally, by the time baby reaches 7-12 weeks, a regular sleep pattern will have been established. And hopefully, this will be between the hours of 10 pm – 7 am. New parents can hang onto the hope that by the time baby is 6 months old, your baby’s sleep pattern will include up to 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

If baby is fussy, make sure that the diaper is clean, that he or she is well fed and just the right temperature. Since crying is the only means of communication, a fussy baby could have one of many things wrong. A comfortable baby is more likely to fall asleep. If his or her face is red or if the hair is damp, baby is too warm. No one is comfortable when he or she is too warm and this includes babies. Just remove a blanket or turn down the heat and watch as your baby’s sleep pattern comes naturally.
